988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: This website provides immediate information for anyone to reach out during a suicide crisis. There is information for a more generalized demographic, but the resource listed here is the page dedicated to the Native American community. There are links to several other organizations and helplines specializing in Native American mental healthcare available at the bottom of the web page. There is also a web page dedicated to attempt survivors, though this is not specific to any one demographic.
The National Alliance of Mental Health: This freely accessible website provides information on a variety of mental health issues, and while there is a web page dedicated solely to suicide prevention for Native Americans, the website contains several other related articles for mental healthcare and suicide prevention specific to Native Americans. This website also includes a few news articles regarding the community’s efforts to raise awareness for and prevent suicide.
Two Feathers Native American Family Services: This website is a portal for the Two Feathers Native American Family Services, a California based group providing support for a wide variety of mental health and substance abuse issues, which are known to be contributing factors for suicide. Their staff are trained in several different therapies, including cognitive behavioral therapy and group therapy, which have been culturally adapted to be more effective. Their expertise may be helpful when trying to build a program for Native American mental healthcare, or if a student or member of faculty or staff is a California resident.
Indigenous Circle of Wellness:This website provides contact information for a therapist counseling group for specifically minority groups including Native Americans. The practice is based in California, which may be prohibitive to students, staff, and faculty actively seeking care, but may be able to provide information on similar local practices, clinics, and programs. They provide therapy support for individuals, couples, families, and young adults, and base their practice on “ancestral wisdom and cultural practices from [their] own lineages…”.
Native News Online: This is a website based on Native American specific news, with several positive articles about suicide awareness in Native American communities. It is accessible to students outside of an academic setting and contains articles of postvention healing as well as remembrance for those lost to suicide. Search terms to best navigate this website for topical articles include “suicide” and “suicide awareness”.
